Event Details
Celebrate the NEW Barney Ford Installation at Stiles African American Heritage Center, 2607 Glenarm Place, Nov. 4, 2-4 p.m.
Barney Ford made an impact on Denver as an early entrepreneur and political activist, becoming the most noted caterer and restaurateur in the Rocky Mountain region.
He brought in fresh oysters by train from the East Coast and innovated refined dishes using local wildlife like venison and prairie dog. Learn more about the incredible contributions he made to Denver’s history in the new installation and historical presentation over afternoon tea.
SEED broadcast
We are exploring plants associated with the local wildlife that Barney Ford incorporated onto his menus. Native plants that support the web of life in the west are incorporated into the Stiles African American Gardens as we transform the ‘hell strip’ into the “Health Strip”. Most native seeds need exposure to winter to germinate. We will be diversifying our plant collection by broadcasting seeds in the open areas of the garden. We will also be augmenting the tea and herb collection with plants that have become a part of our culinary traditions and that thrive in dryland ecologies.
Share the LOVE
Bring non-perishable food items to donate to Brother Jeff’s Cultural Center Community Food Pantry on Welton. Bring canned chicken, tuna or salmon, beans, rice, canned vegetables and fruits, dried pasta & other grains to bolster our neighbors’ holiday tables.
Community Quilt Project
Honoring Grace Stiles' long-term engagement with quilters, we will initiate a community quilt project made up of representations of western ecology, our historical relationships with plants and the animals they support. The work will be installed in the garden as part of the P.S. You Are Here community arts grant.
