Arts & Culture Youth Award

This award is presented to a person under 24 who has made a noteworthy difference in the community through the arts or an organization that has significantly impacted the lives of youth in the City and County of Denver through the arts.

2022 Award Winner: Sacred Voices
Sacred Voices is a Denver-based, Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC+), youth-focused organization dedicated to promoting unity and healing among BIPOC+ communities through creative expression, while empowering youth to find their voices and strength to become leaders in their communities. Sacred Voices hosts the only youth-focused open mic in town, and conducts culturally engaging spoken word/poetry workshops. The organization also hosts a monthly radio program on KGNU, and the “Speak Your Truth Summer Program” for youth aged 14-25, through which youth strengthen their cultural knowledge, develop leadership skills, engage in creative expression, build a sense of self-identity and heal themselves through culturally responsive mental health and holistic practices.

Este premio se otorga a una persona menor de 24 años que ha marcado una diferencia notable en la comunidad a través de las artes o una organización que ha tenido un impacto significativo en las vidas de los jóvenes en la ciudad y el condado de Denver a través de las artes.

Ganador del premio 2022: Voces sagradas
Voces Sagradas es una organización enfocada en la juventud negra, indígena y de color (BIPOC+) con sede en Denver, dedicada a promover la unidad y la curación entre las comunidades BIPOC+ a través de la expresión creativa, al tiempo que empodera a los jóvenes para que encuentren sus voces y fortaleza para convertirse en líderes en sus comunidades Voces sagradas alberga el único micrófono abierto centrado en los jóvenes en la ciudad y lleva a cabo talleres de poesía/palabra hablada culturalmente atractivos. Arts & Culture Innovation Award

This award is presented to an individual or organization that has found innovative and creative ways to make meaningful connections with community or partner with others through arts and culture during 2020 and 2021 – a time of shutdowns and social distancing.

2022 Award Winner: Danielle SeeWalker
Danielle SeeWalker (Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta, citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe) is a multi-disciplinary artist, youth mentor and leader in the American Indian community in Denver. Danielle centers much of her art around the Native American community - a population that has been severely misrepresented, underrepresented or not represented at all - thematically depicting American Indian elders and highlighting the two-spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) community through her art. Her work in the arts and her focus on the Native American community have been inspirational and necessary, especially during the pandemic, breaking down stereotypes and microaggressions by accurately displaying Indigenous people as successful, contributing members of our city and society.

Este premio se otorga a una persona u organización que ha encontrado formas innovadoras y creativas de hacer conexiones significativas con la comunidad o asociarse con otros a través del arte y la cultura durante 2020 y 2021, una época de cierres y distanciamiento social.

Ganador del premio 2022: Danielle SeeWalker
Danielle SeeWalker (Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta, ciudadana de la tribu Standing Rock Sioux) es una artista multidisciplinaria, mentora de jóvenes y líder en la comunidad indígena estadounidense en Denver. Danielle centra gran parte de su arte en la comunidad nativa americana, una población que ha sido gravemente tergiversada, subrepresentada o no representada en absoluto, representando temáticamente a los ancianos indios americanos y destacando la comunidad de dos espíritus (LGBTQIA2S+) a través de su arte. Arts & Culture Impact Award

This award is presented to an individual or an organization that has made a significant and lasting impact on arts and culture in the City and County of Denver. This category requires that the nominee have at least 10 years of history in the arts in the City and County of Denver.

2022 Award Winner: James Knapp
James Knapp is the artistic director of Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. With more than 35 years of leading university, church and community choruses, he’s also the artistic director emeritus of Bayou City Performing Art and has received the Certificate of Congressional Recognition from the United States House of Representatives, among other honors. Knapp is a powerful voice in the queer choral movement and is especially passionate about using music as a way to unify, heal and bring people together.

Este premio se otorga a una persona u organización que ha tenido un impacto significativo y duradero en las artes y la cultura de la ciudad y el condado de Denver. Esta categoría requiere que el nominado tenga al menos 10 años de historia en las artes en la Ciudad y Condado de Denver.

Ganador del premio 2022: James Knapp
James Knapp es el director artístico del Coro de Hombres Gay de Denver. Arts & Culture EDI Award

This award is presented to an individual or organization that has focused on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) through their work. Nominees for this award may have: worked to integrate an equity practice into their operations, developed a specific program that supports communities that have been historically marginalized including people of color, people with disabilities or LGBTQIA+, presented an event centered in social justice and the arts, or may be able to demonstrate commitments and authentic partnerships with historically under-resourced communities.

2022 Award Winner: The Word, A Storytelling Sanctuary
The Word | A Storytelling Sanctuary is a community-led, Denver-based nonprofit organization that builds cultural equity through the literary arts. The Word’s programs include the annual Editor-Writer Mentorship program, the biennial [margins.] Literary Conference + Book Festival, #MarginsBookselling, the annual BIPOC Bookseller Awards, and a host of year-round community engagement programs and publishing workshops. Each of these programs fills a unique space for The Word’s intersectional constituency of BIPOC+, LGBTQIA2S+, disabled and neurodiverse communities, in which no previous comparable support was available. The Word’s goal is to provide spaces in which its community members embody each and every one of their many facets, and together harness the power of storytelling to move us all toward joyful, vibrant and equitable futures.

Arts & Culture Global Award

This award is presented to an individual or organization that has brought Denver’s arts and culture to the national or world stage. Nominees for this category have received national or international recognition through collaboration, media coverage, or grant dollars received.

Gamelan Tunas Mekar
Gamelan Tunas Mekar is an all-volunteer organization that presents traditional and new music for Balinese gamelan locally, nationally and internationally, educating audiences about the music, dance and traditions of Bali and Indonesia. Modeled after typical village groups found throughout Bali, and learning through traditional methods, this community ensemble provides audiences the rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s most beautiful and sophisticated performing arts. Tunas Mekar serves diverse communities across the front range through performances and collaborations of Balinese expressive arts. They perform for the general public and in schools, and partner with Colorado College, University of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Wyoming in Laramie. The group also performs in support of the Indonesian Consulates in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, and at the request of the Ambassador of Indonesia.

Ganador del Premio 2022: Gamelan Tunas Mekar
Gamelan Tunas Mekar es una organización de voluntarios que presenta música tradicional y nueva para el gamelan balinés a nivel local, nacional e internacional, educando al público sobre la música, la danza y las tradiciones de Bali e Indonesia. Siguiendo el modelo de los grupos típicos de las aldeas que se encuentran en todo Bali, y aprendiendo a través de métodos tradicionales, este conjunto comunitario brinda al público la rara oportunidad de experimentar una de las artes escénicas más bellas y sofisticadas del mundo. Tunas Mekar sirve a diversas comunidades en todo el frente a través de actuaciones y colaboraciones de artes expresivas balinesas.
